Using One

Conversations

Start, find, rename, organize, share, and delete your conversations in One.

Every chat you have with One is saved as a conversation in the sidebar, unless you use a temporary chat. This page covers how to manage them.

Start a new chat

Select New chat at the top of the sidebar. On a phone, open the sidebar first.

A new chat always starts on One's Auto model, even if you used a different model or the Jury & Judge in your last chat. To use something else, pick it from the model selector before you send your first message.

One names each chat automatically from your first message. The name appears in the sidebar shortly after you send it.

Find a past conversation

Your conversations are listed in the sidebar, newest first.

To search them, type in the Search messages box at the top of the sidebar. Search matches the words in your chat titles and messages, so it finds exact words rather than topics. Searching for "invoice" finds chats that contain the word "invoice," not chats about billing that never use it.

Rename, duplicate, archive, or delete a conversation

Each conversation in the sidebar has a menu.

  1. Hover over the conversation in the sidebar. On a touch screen, tap the conversation to open it. In the One mobile app, press and hold the conversation instead and skip the next step.
  2. Select the ... button next to its name.
  3. Choose an option:
    • Rename changes the chat's name.
    • Duplicate makes a copy of the chat.
    • Archive hides the chat from the sidebar without deleting it.
    • Delete removes the chat permanently, after you confirm.
    • Share creates a link to the chat. See Share a conversation.
    • Change project moves the chat into a project. See Projects.

Find an archived chat

Open Settings, go to General, and select Archived chats. From there you can open, unarchive, or delete archived conversations.

Delete all your chats

To clear your whole history, open Settings, go to Data & Privacy, and select Clear all chats under Danger zone. This cannot be undone.

Temporary chats

A temporary chat is not saved to your history. Use one for a quick question or anything you'd rather not keep.

  1. Start a new chat.
  2. Before you send your first message, select Temporary Chat (the dashed speech-bubble icon) at the top right of the header. The keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+Shift+Y (⌘+Shift+Y on a Mac). The button is hidden once a chat has messages.
  3. Chat as usual. The message box changes color while the chat is temporary.

Temporary chats don't appear in the sidebar or in search, and they are deleted automatically after 30 days. One also doesn't use or update your memory in a temporary chat.

To make every new chat temporary, open Settings, go to Chat, and turn on Temporary Chat by default. This setting is saved in your browser, so set it on each device.

The One mobile app also has temporary chats: start a new chat and select Temporary chat.

Bookmarks

Bookmarks are labels you create to group related conversations, such as "Project Alpha" or "Recipes."

  1. Open a conversation.
  2. Select the bookmark button in the header.
  3. Choose an existing bookmark, or select New Bookmark to create one.

To show only the chats with a particular bookmark, select Bookmarks at the top of the chat list and pick one. To rename or delete bookmarks, open the Bookmarks panel from the icons along the edge of the sidebar.

Projects

Projects group related conversations in their own section of the chat list. To add a chat to a project, open the conversation's menu and select Change project. To take it out again, select Remove from project.

Working with messages

Hover over a message (or tap it on a phone) to see its actions.

  • Copy copies the message text.
  • Edit changes one of your messages. You can save the change, or save and get a new answer.
  • Regenerate asks One to answer again. Use the arrows under a message to switch between the different answers.
  • Read aloud speaks the answer. See Voice.
  • Fork starts a new conversation from that point, so you can explore a different direction without changing the original. You can choose to copy only the visible messages, include related branches, or include everything up to that message.
  • Check hallucinations asks One to review the answer's factual claims. See Checking an answer.

If an answer is still being written, One disables the send button until it's finished. You can stop a reply early with the stop button.

When a reply fails

If the model can't answer, for example because you've hit a rate limit or your message is too long, One shows the reason in a red box where the answer would be. The message stays marked as an error, and the only action offered is Regenerate. Wait a moment and try again, or switch to a different model.

Share a conversation

You can share a read-only copy of a conversation with others. Anyone who opens the link must sign in to One to see it.

  1. Open the conversation's menu in the sidebar and select Share.
  2. Select Create link.
  3. Select Copy link and send it to whoever you like. You can also select Generate QR Code to open it on a phone.

The link shows the conversation as it was when you created it. Later messages aren't included unless you update the link.

To stop sharing, open Share again and delete the link, or manage all your links under Settings > Data & Privacy > Shared links.

A shared link includes copies of any files attached to the conversation.

Export and import

To save a copy of a conversation to your device, open it and select the Export/Share button at the top right of the header, then choose Export. You can pick a file name and a format: screenshot (PNG), text, Markdown, JSON or CSV. The button appears once the chat has at least one message.

To bring conversations into One from a JSON export, open Settings > Data & Privacy and use Import conversations.
