Using the app

Voice in the app

Dictate messages and have answers read aloud in the One app for Android, using One's speech service or your phone's own.

The app can turn what you say into a message and read One's answers aloud. By default it uses One's own speech service, the same as voice on the web. You can switch either one to your phone's built-in speech instead.

Dictate a message

  1. Tap the microphone button in the message box.
  2. The first time, Android asks whether One can use your microphone. Allow it.
  3. Speak, then tap the button again to stop.
  4. What you said appears in the message box. Check it, then send it.

If you see Microphone permission is required for voice input, you turned down the microphone request. Open your phone's Settings, go to Apps, then One, then Permissions, and allow Microphone.

Have an answer read aloud

Tap Read aloud (the speaker button) under one of One's answers. Tap it again to stop. If you don't see it, tap More options under the answer.

Speech settings

Open Settings, go to the Chat tab, and look under Speech.

  • Auto-send after speech sends your message as soon as dictation finishes, without you tapping send.
  • Auto-read responses reads each new answer aloud automatically.
  • TTS Voice chooses the voice One reads with, and Test Voice plays a sample. The voices are the same as on the web. See Speech settings for what their names mean.

Dictation: One's service or your phone's

Tap Speech-to-Text Settings and choose an Engine:

  • Server (the default) records what you say, then sends the recording to One's speech service to turn into text. It works the same as dictation on the web.
  • Built-in uses your phone's own speech recognizer and shows the words as you speak.

With Built-in, on Android 12 and later you can also turn on:

  • On-device recognition, to turn speech into text on your phone instead of sending it online. If your phone can't do this for your language, it uses its online recognizer instead.
  • Stop when I pause, to end dictation when you stop speaking, instead of when you tap stop. Together with Auto-send after speech, this sends your message hands-free.

Language sets the language you'll speak. Leave it on Auto-detect if you're not sure.

Reading aloud: One's voices or your phone's

Tap Text-to-Speech Settings and choose a Source:

  • Server (the default) uses One's voices.
  • Device (built-in) uses your phone's own text-to-speech voices. You can choose the Voice and adjust the Speech Rate and Pitch.

Tap Preview Voice to hear your choice, then Save.

These settings are separate from your speech settings on the web. Changing them in the app doesn't change them on the web, or the other way round.
