Desktop Settings

One for desktop's own settings for the Ask One shortcut, notifications, opening at login and keeping One running.

Desktop Settings are for the app on this computer. One's own settings, such as the theme, language and speech, are still under Settings…. To open Desktop Settings, choose Desktop Settings… from the One menu (Mac), the File menu (Windows and Linux) or the tray icon's menu.

Under Ask One:

  • Open Ask One with a keyboard shortcut from any app turns the Ask One shortcut on or off.
  • Show answers in a small window, over the app you're in. When it's ticked, Ask One's answers appear in a small window. When it isn't, they appear in the main One window. It's ticked at first, except on Linux desktops that use Wayland, such as Ubuntu's and Fedora's, which can't keep it on top; see The answer window opens in the main window on Linux.
  • To use a different shortcut, click Change…, then press the keys you want. On a Mac, hold ⌘, ⌃ or ⌥ and press a key; on Windows and Linux, hold Ctrl or Alt and press a key. Shift on its own isn't enough, because it would get in the way of typing. Press Esc to cancel. If another app already uses the keys, Desktop Settings says so; choose different ones.
  • Reset goes back to ⌥Space (Mac) or Alt+Shift+Space (Windows and Linux).

Under General:

  • Show a notification when One replies while you're in another app. See Notifications.
  • Open One when you sign in to this computer. See Open at login.
  • Keep One running in the notification area when its window is closed (Windows), or in the system tray (Linux). See The window.

These are the same settings as in the tray icon's menu; change one in either place and the other shows it. The app's version is at the bottom.
