Updates

How One for desktop keeps itself up to date, restarting to update, and checking for updates yourself.

The app keeps itself up to date. It checks for a new version when it starts and every few hours, and downloads it in the background.

On Linux, it depends on how you installed One:

  • .deb or .rpm: updates come through Software Updater or sudo apt upgrade on Ubuntu and Debian, and Software or sudo dnf upgrade on Fedora, with your other software. Installing the package adds Denizen Blu's package repository for this, and updating from version 1.0.2 or earlier adds it too. One doesn't update itself then: Help > Check for Updates… says One updates through your system.
  • If you removed the repository: One doesn't add it back. It updates itself, and asks for your password to install each update.
  • AppImage: One updates itself in place, without asking for a password.

When the new version is ready, a notification says One followed by the version number and is ready, and the tray icon's menu shows Restart to Update. You can:

  • carry on: the update installs the next time you quit One, or
  • click the notification and choose Restart Now, or choose Restart to Update in the tray icon's menu. Anything you're typing in the message box is lost, so send or copy it first.

To check straight away, choose Help > Check for Updates…. The app tells you that One is up to date, that it's downloading a new version, or that it Couldn't check for updates. See Couldn't check for updates.

Most changes to One itself, like new models or features in chat, reach the app straight away without an update, because the app shows One from Denizen Blu's servers. Updates to the app bring changes to the app around One, such as menus, Ask One and notifications.
